Biplab Sarkar

I'm Biplab a visual artist from Siliguri, now based in Delhi. My practice focuses on street hawkers capturing their daily lives, interactions and sales technique with the customers. I aim to depict the human side of these vendors, highlighting their relationship between body and objects in an urban context. I documented them through my practice. I leave a lot of empty spaces in my works and I think it’s coming from my mind because I love to be alone even amongst others. I want to apply this space intentionally as a positive space, inviting viewers to fill in the gaps and create their own narratives of forming a personal conversation with my works. Visually my works have a strong influence of miniature style. I am highly inspired by Indian Miniature Paintings. I consider my art practice somewhere very similar or parallel to that era. I feel an urge to touch the essence of the life of the hawkers and the workers of 21st century, working in modern culture and wandering in the society for their living. My process often involved from communication with the hawkers about their lifestyle and livelihood. Those old Kerala houses with their unique architecture and rich history do have stories to tell. The traditional Nalukettu or Ettukettu homes with their wooden carvings, sloping roofs, and cultural spaces, reflect the rich cultural heritage of these old houses in Kerala. When I visit Kerala it sparks nostalgia, transporting me back to my childhood home. I invite viewers to connect with their essence and capture these stories in my art practice, preserving this heritage.
